Aegan': Nayan has a sure winner

Tamil film 'Aegan' is supposed to be a remake of the Hindi blockbuster 'Main Hoon Naa'. But, many changes have been made to suit Tamil tastes and the image of the matinee idol Ajith.

Ajith plays a cop who, disguised as a student, is sent to guard a superior officer's daughter from an underworld don. How he succeeds in his mission is the long and short of 'Aegan' - translated into English by the star's fans as 'one-man-army'.

While Shah Rukh Khan played an army officer in the Hindi original, Ajith plays a police officer as it obviously suits the present trend in Tamil films.

Shiva (Ajith) a CID (criminal investigation department of the police), is on a mission to safeguard a college student (Piyaa) whose father (portrayed by Devan) is a key link to a business tycoon with underworld links (Suman).

In the college, Shiva falls for a beautiful lecturer played by Nayanathara.

The snide remarks by younger characters playing students making fun of an 'elderly' Ajith as 'uncle' is a bit offbeat because the movie star's fans are accustomed to seeing him in more youthful roles.

Ajith pokes fun at himself as well, pointing to the slight bulge in his midriff.

The family drama linking Piyaa with a guy of the same college (played by Navdeep) forms the emotional anchor to the story that follows the predictable climax in which the villain is finally laid low.

The India-Pakistan link, shown so successfully in the Hindi original, has been completely avoided in 'Aegan'. Ajith is agile but no patch on Shah Rukh Khan.

Choreography by Raju Sundaram and sibling Prabhu Deva is excellent.

While Piyaa and Navdeep are passable, the show-stealers are Nayanathara (thanks to her curves) and Jayaram (playing the bumbling college principal provoking quite a few laughs).

Yuvan Shankar Raja strikes the right chords with his music. The cinematography (credits shared by quite a few) is breathtaking.

Overall 'Aegan' is an adequate remake of a hit. Ajith is certainly on to a winner since he hardly has any competition during this Diwali.

As the audio of “Aegan” audio already hits the stores it’s confirm that the movie would hit theatres this Diwali but there were some confusion that the movie will release bit earlier than Diwali for weekend collection. There is more good news for Ajith fans, If reports are to be belived then, Ajith has agreed to act in the remake of super duper hit Hindi film Race, in double role!. Ashok Amritraj is remaking the Hindi film ‘Race’ with Ajith Kumar in the lead. Ajith has built a reputation of giving his trademark stamp to remake. With this Ajith will be doing the twin-brother act for the fourth time, earlier he had done it in Vaali directed by S. J. Suryah, Villain and Varalaru both directed by K. S. Ravikumar. Hindi film Released on March 21, 2008 worldwide, it stars Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif in pivotal roles. Hindi film has two brothers played by Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna double-crossing each other which eventually leads to their downfall. It seems that Ajith was approached by Ashok Amritraj, producer of Shankar’s Jeans. Having been attracted by the potential of Race, Ajith has agreed to the project. Ashok Amritraj is Chairman and CEO of Hyde Park Entertainment, a Hollywood producer and a former tennis player. His brothers are also tennis players, Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj. Aegan is a upcoming tamil film currently being directed by Raju Sundaram, who with Aegan will direct his maiden film. Ajith Kumar acts in the lead role, whilst Nayantara, Navdeep, Suhasini Ratnam, Nassar and Jayaram also play roles in the film. The film, which has been under production since late 2007, has Yuvan Shankar Raja as the music composer. Jeyaram, donning an important role in Aegan, had some good words for his co-star Ajith. Ajith is considered by many in Kollywood to be a gentleman in the film industry, and Jeyaram’s words about him only seem to substantiate it. According to the actor, a man of few words, Ajith never minced his words. Speaking about Aegan, Jeyaram claimed that the film will be talked for its comedy. Aegan is choreographer Raju Sundaram’s debut directorial venture. Expectations over this film have been skyrocketing ever since it was announced, as Ajith and Nayanthara are pairing up yet again after the colossal success of Billa. Aegan, in all probability, could hit the silver screens sometime during September. Point in fact; there are actors who still consider going on air in television as harmful to their mainstream big screen image. The television channels only seem interested in competing for broadcast rights of every single movie being produced. Although the crores spent on buying such rights are worth every paisa, novel concepts for newer television formats, including game shows and talk shows that make use of the Kollywood star power, will have a telling impact on the TRP ratings. For instance, Vikram hosting a reality-stunt show or Surya hosting a fitness based reality show will be sure shot hits. Or how about Ajith hosting a regionalized version of Das Ka Dhum and Vijay Paanchvi Paas? If only the producers care enough to look around for a brainwave, getting up close with our Kollywood stars in our own living room could become a reality soon.
Aegan Ajith signed for Ascar?

Murugadoss’s assistant Raj Kumar seems to have hit the jackpot. The young director had approached Aascar Ravichandran with a story. Impressed by it, Aascar is said to have offered Raj Kumar with three choices – Kamal Haasan, Vijay or Ajith – for the lead role though the director preferred a relatively new hero. Aegan Ajith insisted that a film with such a good storyline must have an established hero. The director without any hesitation is said to have picked Ajith. And things started moving swiftly for the director. A quick discussion with Ajith revealed that he would be available after Aegan, which is nearing completion and another project for Sivaji Productions that follows. Aascar Ravichandran has signed up Raj Kumar, who is now working on developing the story. Ajith is yet to sign the dotted lines, sources say.

Refuting reports by the media that he was caught inside a caravan toilet for over two hours and thereby stalled Aegan's shooting, Sriman said that it was true that he was trapped but for just 30 minutes or so. Speaking to a Behindwoods correspondent, Sriman disclosed that the spring in the lock gave way and the door got jammed. His efforts to attract the attention of the crew went futile, as his calls were not heard due to the noise from the generators. Finally, a worker noticed that he was trapped inside and called the others for assistance. Sriman also clarified that the shooting was not stalled as he had completed his scene just then. "By the time I was out, the director had my scenes ready to be shot," Sriman added. The Titles Scrutiny Committee appointed by the State Government of Tamilnadu has now declared that Aegan is not a Tamil word since it did not find a place in the Tamil Dictionary or in any Tamil Literature. The news is that there would be a character of Ajith's younger brother in the film and Navdeep who had made an impressive debut with Arindhum Ariyamalum and Ilavattam will don the role of Ajith's brother. The filming of Aegan is fast approaching its final stages. The Aegan unit, which was in Yelagiri to shoot a few important scenes and a song featuring Ajith and Nayantara, has returned to Chennai after filming them. The film, which is a remake of the Hindi blockbuster Main Hoon Na starring Shahrukh Khan, is directed by dance-choreographer-actor Raju Sundaram. S Ramakrishnan pens the dialogues for Aegan, who has already written for films like Sandakozhi, Baba and etc. Veteran actors Suhasini Manirathnam, Jayaram, Suman, Nasser, M.S.Baskar and Sriman are also in the cast. Arinthum Ariyamalum fame Navdeep, one of the young heroes of the industry is also playing a crucial role in this movie. Basking in the success of Sivaji, the famous villain, Suman had been quite choosy about his career ever since. He has apparently turned down the various offers that flooded in. But not any more.
